How long does it take to recover from a vasectomy?

Will I need to take time off from work to recoup from a vasectomy? What about working out, will I need to take it easy for a few days?

I typically advise 4 hours of bed rest and one week of no heavy lifting or sex.

Depending when you are off—for instance, if you are off on weekends—most people have it done on a Thursday or Friday, they are off their feet for the weekend, and then go back to work Monday. I advise you slowly get back into your exercise routine and wear compression underwear for a week to prevent movement of the scrotum.

Here, at a Personal Choice, we recommend you rest the day of vasectomy and do only light activity for two days after, with a lifting restriction of 10 pounds. Once the two days have passed, you can resume normal activity.

Usually, patients take it easy for a few days. Exercise is OK after 3 to 5 days if you're feeling fine.

The recovery from a vasectomy is relatively easy in the vast majority of cases. I do my vasectomies on Fridays. Almost every man is back to work on Monday. He usually has a dull achy feeling for part of the weekend. I do suggest that he not have intercourse or do significant exercise for 7 days. This is probably overcautious. However, I am concerned about delayed bleeding, though I have never seen this happen. Most men are fairly shocked at how little discomfort they have both during the procedure and afterwards.
