How can a urologist who has never had a vasectomy himself vouch for its safety?

Urologists explain its safe, but I can't find a doctor who has had a vasectomy himself. I called practices all over New England.

Rather a Dr. himself has had a vasectomy or not would say nothing about the safety of the procedure. The urologic community has studied vasectomy by monitoring thousands of men over time. There have been questions that have been raised but those questions have been answered by the studies that have been done. In particular the question as to whether or not there is any increase in autoimmune disease or cancer following a vasectomy has been looked at extensively. We do know that the immune system is stimulated and if anything that might lead to a diminishment of some diseases. However, neither has that been proven although thousands of men who have had vasectomies have been followed over many years. The procedure is safe beyond doubt.

There have been studies that have checked to see if there is any connection to having had a vasectomy and then having heart disease or prostate cancer. It has never been concluded that there is any long term negative consequences to a vasectomy. It is probably coincidental that you could not find a urologist who has had one done. I have performed many vasectomies on doctors to include a partner of mine, who is a urologist. You can easily google this subject and find several studies to allay your concerns.

Understanding research article results, using best techniques, and a lot of personal experience performing it. One doesn't need to have every surgical procedure performed on oneself to understand the safety of any procedure. I had a vasectomy in 1987 and everything worked out perfectly. I have an exceptional and long experience performing the procedure using modern minimally invasive techniques with a huge list of satisfied patients.

I understand that it is helpful to hear whether your urologist has enough confidence in the vasectomy procedure to have had it himself. I do tell my patients that I have had it done. But health care is a private matter and it may be that many urologists have not shared that information with their staff to share with callers.

That said, vasectomy is a safe procedure with well-described risks. A doctor who performs many vasectomies will be very well-versed on the risks and confident on how they can be minimized to achieve the most reliable form of permanent contraception.

I've performed hundreds before and after my own. I had no concerns performing the procedure or having it done myself.
