No-Scalpel Vasectomy in Corpus Christi, Texas (TX)
Sharp instruments near your groin might make you
apprehensive, so if you’re seeking a vasectomy but are uncomfortable with
incisions down there, the no-scalpel method is the best solution.
How a no-scalpel
vasectomy is performed
The
no-scalpel vasectomy is performed under local anesthesia on an outpatient-basis.
Your surgeon touches the scrotum to feel for the vas deferens (the tubes that transport
sperm) and holds them in place. Your surgeon then injects a local anesthetic
using a tiny needle to completely numb the site. A small hole is opened on the
scrotum with sharp forceps, then stretched out so your vas deferens can be pulled
through. Your vas deferens is then severed, cauterized and closed with two
titanium clips.
Recovery after surgery
Like a traditional vasectomy, you will experience some
temporary pain, mild discomfort, bruising and swelling after the procedure. You’ll
need to use ice packs for the first 36 hours to minimize swelling. Recovery
time is typically five days,
and you’ll need to avoid strenuous physical activity. You may resume work after two days (unless
your job involves heavy lifting).
You will need to refrain from sexual activity until you are completely healed.
Also, you will not be sterile right away, so you will need to use secondary
forms of birth control until your doctor verifies that your sperm count is
zero.
Costs
No-scalpel vasectomies are generally covered by insurance. Your
total out-of-pocket cost depends on your deductible, doctor visit co-pays and co-insurance.
For those without insurance, you’ll need to talk to your doctor concerning
costs.
