I'm scheduled to have a vasectomy under general anesthesia. How will the recovery differ?

I went in to have second vasectomy after getting a reversal 10 years ago. The procedure couldn't be completed because there was too much scar tissue. I now have to do it under general anesthesia. Should I be concerned? How will the recovery differ from the first vasectomy and the reversal, which were easy?

A second vasectomy after a reversal can usually be performed under just local anesthesia by an experienced urologist. Scarring can make identification of the vas more difficult. Hence, if your physician does not do a large number of vasectomies, you may be able to avoid the general anesthesia by seeking a second opinion.

Regarding the recovery from your second vasectomy, it is usually routine, unless there is significantly more tissue manipulation. Again, in a case such as this, the experience of your surgeon makes a difference.

Don't be worried. My prediction is that everything will be fine. Recovery really differs only from anesthesia...Just a day of full resting.

You will be more comfortable under general anesthesia. Recovery time is not any different than local anesthesia, except for the day of anesthesia when you have to be fasting and someone will have to drive you home.
