Is it possible for my husband to produce more sperm now if 10 yrs ago he had a low count?

Hello! My husband and I are 20 years apart. He had a vasectomy about 15 years ago and then had a reversal in 2007. We have been trying for the last 6 years to get pregnant with no luck. When he had his reversal, there were no sperm present on one side and very few on the other. Is it possible that over time he has started to produce more or do we pretty much just need to start looking into IVF?

Hi, the presence or absence of "sperm on one side" at the time of the operation is only important to determine what specific type of connection to make at the time of surgery on that particular side. It has little, if anything, to do with how much sperm the testicles produce. The sperm count should be checked as it is what will give you an idea of what to do now. It certainly might be that IVF is the route to take or, if there is no sperm now, another surgical procedure might be necessary. It is important that he is not on any type of testosterone preparation or medication as that shuts down sperm production.

Hope this helps,

We can check a hormone level called FSH. If it is normal and you are less than 35 without fertility issues a redo reversal remains an option.

I had a vasectomy before meeting my partner and now that we will be marrying soon, we'd like to start a family. So I had a vasectomy reversal three months ago. I have not ejaculated more than 10 times for purity purposes before marriage. I had my sperm tested after the reversal procedure and it shows that the sperm has not returned. Can we hold out hope? Is there a chance the sperm will return?
