I had a vasectomy 12 years ago. Do my testes still produce enough sperm so that we can undergo IVF or ICSI? At what age do testes stop making sperm?

I am 40 years old and relatively healthy.

Hi, testes continue to make sperm. You also have the option of vasectomy reversal which, when performed by an expert in microsurgical vasectomy reversal, can be quite successful. So, there are many possibilities for you!

Hope this helps,

There is no definitive answer to your question. Most testicles can still produce sperm 12 years later. You should see an reproductive endocrinologist for more information about IVF and ICSI.

A semen analysis will let you know if you have any sperm in the ejaculate suitable for IVF or ICSI. You probably don't but some men have very low numbers of sperm after a vasectomy that are not enough to achieve natural pregnancy but may be suitable for in vitro. Men continue to produce sperm well into older age, they are different than women in this regard. If you have zero sperm then you may be a candidate for a microscopic vasectomy reversal.

I had a vasectomy before meeting my partner and now that we will be marrying soon, we'd like to start a family. So I had a vasectomy reversal three months ago. I have not ejaculated more than 10 times for purity purposes before marriage. I had my sperm tested after the reversal procedure and it shows that the sperm has not returned. Can we hold out hope? Is there a chance the sperm will return?
