How long after a vasectomy can I do watersports like surfing?

I have heard that I could not surf for 6-8 weeks after a vasectomy because of pollutants and bacteria in the ocean. Is this true? I need to know since I am planning on a surf trip in the next month or so.

It depends on the type of vasectomy that was done. If it was done using a scalpel then you certainly should not surface for at least 3 weeks to be safe. If a no scalpel vasectomy was done that can probably be cut in half. But the person who does the vasectomy is the best 1 to answer this question because he understands what the status of your wounds where the vasectomy was accomplished bilaterally is.

If you are three days out from a no scalpel vasectomy and feel great, I say go for it! If you had the type of vasectomy that required stitches, wait one week.

In general, most patients can resume normal activities, including sports, at one week post-vasectomy, assuming there are no difficulties. Involvement in water sports also assumes the wound is closed and healing well. It is always best to check with your surgeon.
