We are trying to decide which would be the best option. With the least amount of side effects and complications.

Vasectomy is a simple non or minimally invasive procedure. It is a 10- 15 minute procedure. A tubal ligation is a genral anesthesia procedure with other potential complications.

Unless your wife is having a tubal ligation done during a C-section, a vasectomy is much safer, less invasive and less expensive than a tubal ligation. Unfortunately, women have actually died with tubal ligation. On the other hand, with the newer no-needle vasectomy, a man can have a painless vasectomy done in less than 10 minutes with an experienced vasectomist.

The tubal ligation requires general anesthesia. A vasectomy is done in the office with local anesthesia. I give mild sedation with some valium and pain meds for my patients but many don't. It should take about 15 minutes. Unless you've had prior groin surgeries it's probably easier to get the vasectomy. Discuss with your physician.

A vasectomy procedure is very minimally invasive and can be done under local anesthesia in a doctors office and
it's cost is around $500.
A tubal ligation procedure is an invasive procedure that is done under general anesthesia in a hospital outpatient setting and costs over $5000.
