No-Needle Anesthetic Technique
A small change makes a big difference to uneasy vasectomy patients. Now, "Needle-Phobics" patients can worry less...with virtually no pain.
Couples who have actively discussed the vasectomy procedure will appreciate that certain fears and apprehensions are quite real - especially for the man who is considering this option. One of these fears is that of an anesthetic injection. Although a vasectomy is a quick, safe and simple procedure, this anesthetic concern is heightened in ‘needle-phobic’ individuals due to the private location of the procedure.
With vasectomy, an anesthetic is used to numb the skin and tissue. While this anesthetic has been typically delivered with a needle, some doctors have begun to administer the anesthetic for a vasectomy without using a syringe needle. Instead, the anesthetic is delivered by way of jet spray injection instrument. This new technology can eliminate the potentially uncomfortable two needle sticks (one needle stick per vas deferens), otherwise common with the standard techniques.
Not only does the "No Needle Vasectomy" reduce anxiety - a significant objection for some guys - medical study* findings report patient satisfaction ratings are quite high and pain scores are low - virtually pain-free according to most patients.
Not available everywhere - ask your doctor.
The No Needle Vasectomy technique is new. Originally pioneered by some doctors as recently as 2001 - with many thousands of procedures having been performed in Canada in this manner – the technique is just beginning to be adopted by doctors across the United States. (Jet injection anesthetic technology has been used in other medical specialties, such as dentistry and podiatry, for several years.) Fortunately, the No-Needle technique of anesthesia can be used with the various minimally-invasive techniques of performing a vasectomy. Ask your doctor for more information.
Existing technique compared to No-Needle method
The traditional method (left) involves inserting a needle into the scrotum to anesthetize the area prior to surgery -
a key reason why the procedure can be painful. With the no needle approach (right), the physician can anesthetize
the surgical area with a jet pressure-spray device, which delivers the numbing agent without a needle. (see www.NoNeedleVasectomy.com for more information.)
Benefits of No Needle Vasectomy
Physicians report three key benefits of the no needle approach...that it simplifies the surgical technique, that it lowers patient fears, and that it reduces any pain. As the technique becomes more widely available, it will answer another important concern for many men.
There may not be a doctor in your area yet who uses this technique. If you are not yet able to find a doctor who performs this specific technique, you will likely find a doctor who can perform one of the other proven vasectomy techniques.
